Synopsis

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

Review

No matter how many times I read this book I never tire of it, it’s a beautiful book that I want to make everyone I know read.

book cover (16)Shadow and Bone is the kind of book that you finish and immediately need to rush out and buy the next book in the series (which I did). It’s a beautiful story full of action, romance and magic. The world building in this story is excellent, it’s gorgeously written, with a blend of magic and Russian folklore. Bardugo has created an immense world full of history and myth and the Kingdom of Ravka leaps off the page in full glory. It leads you to be completely immersed in the story and this beautiful land.

My favourite thing about this book was the magical elements and the way that Leigh Bardugo brought this to life. The Grisha are masters of the ‘small science’ and command a variety of different powers from summoning fire to stopping your heart. Children are tested all around the country in hope of finding new Grisha with new powers. They go to school together, and jostle and fight to be the strongest. The chapters in which Alina is training are perhaps some of my favourites, and part of the reason for that is it’s such a hard graft, she is not magically amazing overnight, she has to work and fight and push herself in order to harness her power.

This brings me to the characters, Alina is an interesting character – though she can be a bit whiny and spineless – the character development is great and she grows into a really fascinating protagonist.  There are so many characters that I love. Genya, another Grisha who lives at the palace is fantastic, she’s witty and clever and is definitely one of my favourites. Without a doubt my favourite character has to be the Darkling. He’s the ultimate mysterious character – you’re constantly trying to guess what his motives are and what he’s really up to.

Shadow and Bone really is a fabulous story – it will keep you hooked right to the very end. I definitely advise you to start this one on a weekend, because you’re not going to want to eat, sleep or move till you reach the end.

August Wrap Up!

August Wrap Up!

Book Review (4)
I’m going to try and get better at posting my wrap ups a bit closer to the end of the month, instead of three quarters of the way through the following month, but we’ll see how that goes (ha!) August was a great reading month and I completed thirteen books, which honestly is probably the most I’ve ever read in a single month!

1. Sweet Black Waves – Kristina Perez

31179006
I started this book right at the end of July and it was the first book I completed in August. A retelling of the Tristan and Eseult legend, this book was full of magic and romance and I enjoyed it so much. There is so much detail and research put into this story and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. 4/5.

2. The Way Past Winter – Kiran Millwood Hargrave

40366591

I was lucky enough to win a signed proof of this book at YALC this year and it was the first book I picked up when I got home. I loved Girl of Ink and Stars and I absolutely flew through this, it’s beautifully written and full of magic and wonder. It’s already got a lot of buzz around it and fans are definitely not going to be disappointed. 5/5.

3. Shadow and Bone – Leigh Bardugo

10194157
I for some unknown reason have never read Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo. I’ve read Shadow and Bone and Siege and Storm multiple times and I loved so many of the characters but have never completed the series. It seemed like time to rectify that, so I reread Shadow and Bone in preparation. I loved it just as much as I did the first time and the Darkling will forever be one of my favourite characters. 5/5.

4. Puzzle Girl – Rachael Featherstone

33142047

This is a fun and light contemporary romance about a young woman dealing with a break up and trying to further her career. It’s cute and enjoyable (with plenty of awkward cringy moments) and I really enjoyed the story. 4/5.

5. The Lost Witch – Melvin Burgess

36521363

I was  a massive fan of Melvin Burgess growing up so when I received a review copy of this book I was so excited. I love books about witches and I thought this would be right up my street. Alas I was left a bit disappointed. I really like the way the Norse mythology was woven in but I felt overall it was a bit slow and I wasn’t really gripped by the story. 3/5.

6. The Humans – Matt Haig

21265230
This was a buddy read with my boyfriend and it sounded like something we were both really going to enjoy. The book is a quick read and it’s really fascinating looking at how humans and society view themselves. There were a few really funny moments and I liked Matt Haig’s writing style. I was however a little disappointed with the ending so I ended up giving this 3/5.

7. Show Stealer – Hayley Barker

40615662 (2)

I loved Hayley’s debut last year Show Stealer – it was one of my favourite books of 2017. I was really excited to find out what was in store next for these terrific characters and I wasn’t disappointed. This instalment is darker and much more focused on politics and intrigue, but I loved every second and could not put it down. 5/5.

8. Darksoul – Anna Stephens

36896810
Anna Stephens was my new favourite author of 2017. I loved Godblind more than any other book I read last year, and it has become one of my all time favourite books ever. This was probably one of my most anticipated releases of 2018 and it was so good I honestly can’t explain my love for this series. It’s dark, violent, gory and full of fascinating characters and I’m definitely thinking about rereading the books already because I just cannot get enough. 5/5 (all the stars!)

9. City of Ghosts – Victoria Schwab

40512862 (1)

A book set in Edinburgh? Sold! Now shameful secret time: despite owning quite a few of her books I’ve actually never read a Victoria Schwab book. Well after reading this gorgeous and spooky tale in a single sitting I am definitely going to be solving that problem. I hope there are plenty more books in this series because I am completely in love with Cassidy and her story. 5/5.

10. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before – Jenny Han

15749186
I really love YA books but I mainly read fantasy and science fiction. I’ve tried a few contemporary YA books and often it takes me ages to read them because they just don’t grip me in the same way. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before had been getting so much attention because of the Netflix adaptation that I decided to give it a go and surprisingly I absolutely loved it. Fun and sweet and such an addictive read, I read it in two days and watched the film straight after. I’m now eagerly awaiting the rest of the series to be delivered because I need to know if it all works out! 4/5.

11. The Secret Deep – Lindsay Gavin

38600182

This was another book that I picked up at YALC which I thought was about mermaids. I found the story a little slow to start but ended up really enjoying it. The book definitely wasn’t what I thought it was – it focuses on science and the creation of new vaccines and was much more of a thriller. It’s a gripping read and one I’m definitely glad I picked up. 4/5.

12. Siege and Storm – Leigh Bardugo

14061955
I continued my reread of the Grisha books with Siege and Storm. I prefer the first book in the series but this was still an unputdownable five star read for me. Will I finally read Ruin and Rising? Who knows! 5/5.

13. Resin – Ane Riel

38589787

This was a gripping thriller that is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Centring on a family who live on a remote island by themselves, this story is dark and unsettling and I found myself thinking about it well after I’d put it down. This is a really original story and completely unforgettable.

So that’s my wrap up for August! What books did you read last month and have you read any of these – if you have what did you think?

Synopsis

The Wolves lie dead beside Rilpor’s soldiers, slaughtered at the hands of the Mireces and their fanatical army.

The veil that once kept the Red Gods at bay has been left in tatters as the Dark Lady’s plans for the world come to fruition. Where the gods walk, blood is spilled on the earth.

All that stands between the Mireces army and complete control of the Kingdom of Rilpor are the walls of its capital, Rilporin, and those besieged inside.

But hope might yet bloom in the unlikeliest of places: in the heart of a former slave, in the mind of a soldier with the eyes of a fox, and in the hands of a general destined to be king.

Review

This is the highly anticipated sequel to Godblind – one of my favourite books of 2017. I was so excited to receive a copy of this book and I honestly couldn’t wait to dive in. After reading the opening chapter I was completely hooked and ended up devouring this book in a few sittings. It’s dark, bloody and gripping and I didn’t want it to end.

book cover (20)Darksoul picks up right where Godblind leaves off, the Mireces are attempting to lay siege to Rilporin and the soldiers are holding it as best they can. This epic story alternates between the characters that we’ve already met in the previous book – but don’t get too attached because not everyone will make it to the end.

Much like the previous book this story is violent and full of the sights, sounds and smells of battle. Anna Stephens has such a fantastic way of bringing the action to life, and that is never more apparent than in this bloody battle. The fighting scenes are jam packed and I was practically on the edge of my seat to find out how it was going to play out.

I’ve seen comparisons between Darksoul and The Two Towers and I think that’s a really apt comparison. The whole book focuses on this one battle, but so much happens in this action packed few weeks. I love so many of the characters – they are so complex and fascinating. Each one is flawed, determined and fighting for his or her own desires. Everyone schemes and you never know what they truly want.

Darksoul certainly feels darker and more intense than the first book in the series, and the short alternating chapters definitely had me racing through the story. The story touches on so many subjects – not just fighting and war but friendship, family religion and politics. Darksoul is a magnificent gripping read that I loved just as much as book one, and I cannot wait to find out what’s in store next.
