Synopsis

Our heroes are back… kind of. From the bestselling co-authors of the Illuminae Files comes the second book in the epic series about a squad of misfits, losers, and discipline cases who just might be the galaxy’s best hope for survival.

First, the bad news: an ancient evil—you know, your standard consume-all-life-in-the-galaxy deal—is about to be unleashed. The good news? Squad 312 is standing by to save the day. They’ve just got to take care of a few small distractions first.

Like the clan of gremps who’d like to rearrange their favorite faces.

And the cadre of illegit GIA agents with creepy flowers where their eyes used to be, who’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on Auri.

Then there’s Kal’s long-lost sister, who’s not exactly happy to see her baby brother, and has a Syldrathi army at her back. With half the known galaxy on their tails, Squad 312 has never felt so wanted.

When they learn the Hadfield has been found, it’s time to come out of hiding. Two centuries ago, the colony ship vanished, leaving Auri as its sole survivor. Now, its black box might be what saves them. But time is short, and if Auri can’t learn to master her powers as a Trigger, the squad and all their admirers are going to be deader than the Great Ultrasaur of Abraaxis IV.

Shocking revelations, bank heists, mysterious gifts, inappropriately tight bodysuits, and an epic firefight will determine the fate of the Aurora Legion’s most unforgettable heroes—and maybe the rest of the galaxy as well.

Review

Copy of book cover - 2020-04-20T121652.203Aurora Rising was one of my favourite books of 2019 so this second instalment in the series was highly anticipated. I was concerned that it wouldn’t live up to my expectations because I loved book one so much, but it was even more addictive than I thought it was going to be. Aurora Burning definitely lives up to the hype and I’m dying to get my hands on book three.

Aurora Burning picks up just after the events of book one. I won’t go into specifics because this is the second book but Squad 312 are still on the run and their escapades set them off on another daring adventure across the galaxy. The plot is fast paced, full of action and edge of your seat moments. There are plenty of epic space battle type moments so if you love big fighting scenes you’re in for a treat with this one.

Much like book one the story is told in alternating points of view from the different members of the squad. I’ve grown really attached to all the characters in the group so I really enjoying seeing the story from all of their different perspectives. There is a bit more of a focus on romance than their was in the previous book which is something I wasn’t as keen on. It’s still fascinating seeing the relationships between the group progress and if you enjoyed book one you’re definitely going to want to see how things develop in Aurora Burning.

Aurora Burning features more than a few surprise twists, a couple I saw coming and some I most definitely did not. It’s a fun and enjoyable read, the series is pure escapism and perfect entertainment for the summer. If you’ve been curious about this series I highly recommend picking it up, your only problem is going to be waiting till 2021 for book number three.

Thoughts

Copy of book cover - 2020-04-20T121652.203This has definitely got to be one of my most anticipated releases for 2020. Aurora Burning is the second instalment in the Aurora Cycle, and book one was one of my favourite books of last year. We’re back following the same characters in Aurora Rising, and this time the stakes are even higher. I completely adored the first book as well as the Illuminae files by these authors, so I’m absolutely dying to get my hands on this book. The story so far has been full of action and banter and I couldn’t put it down. I think this is a highly anticipated release for loads of people, and I’m so excited for it to be released next month. If you haven’t had the chance to check out book one in the series I’d highly recommend it. I currently have a request in for an E-ARC via Netgalley, so if it gets accepted I’ll be abandoning everything to read this one. It’s the perfect story to get lost in, especially if like me you’re stuck at home during quarantine. Aurora Burning is released May 5th by Rock the Boat.

Synopsis

The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

They’re not the heroes we deserve. They’re just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.

Review

book cover (45)Aurora Rising was one of my most anticipated releases of 2019. I adored the Illuminae Files and I was hoping this would be just as fun and exciting. If it’s even possible Aurora Rising was even more incredible than I had hoped and it was an immediate five star read.

The story follows Squad 312, a group of Legionnaires who are flung together as the academy dregs no one else wants on their team. When squad leader Tyler discovers the girl he rescued from space stowed away on his ship it sparks a series of events that they might not live to see the end of.

Aurora Rising is just the most fun and fast paced story. As can be expected with this space epic it sets a pretty relentless pace and I was constantly trying to squeeze chapters in because I was dying to know what would happen next. There’s a really brilliant cast of characters and I grew really attached to all of them. The book is full of sarky, sassy moments and plenty of banter between these wonderful characters.

The plot is really intriguing and I really enjoyed the twists and turns of the story – some of the surprises were a bit obvious and I saw them coming – but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story. There were some emotional moments too and the story certainly ended on an enticing cliffhanger – I’m dying to find out what’s in store next for the squad.

There is a bit more romance in the story than I was expecting and a case of insta-love that I’m not so keen on but it didn’t detract from my enjoyment too much. Overall I thought this was a really fantastic read and if you enjoy fast paced action stories or you’ve read work by these authors before, I’m sure you’ll love this one.
