Synopsis

Trouble is haunting Cassidy Blake . . . even more than usual.

She (plus her ghost best friend, Jacob, of course) are in Paris, where Cass’s parents are filming their TV show about the world’s most haunted cities. Sure, it’s fun eating croissants and seeing the Eiffel Tower, but there’s true ghostly danger lurking beneath Paris, in the creepy underground Catacombs.

When Cass accidentally awakens a frighteningly strong spirit, she must rely on her still-growing skills as a ghosthunter — and turn to friends both old and new to help her unravel a mystery. But time is running out, and the spirit is only growing stronger.

And if Cass fails, the force she’s unleashed could haunt the city forever.

Thoughts

tunnelWelcome to another Waiting on Wednesday! This week I wanted to talk about Tunnel of Bones by Victoria Schwab which is the second instalment in her Cassidy Blake series. Victoria Schwab is like a new found favourite author for me – I read a few of her books last year and loved them and I have the rest of them on my 2019 TBR. Middle grade is not something that I read very often but when I heard about Victoria Schwab’s ghost story set in Edinburgh I just had to pick up a copy – and I’m so glad I did because I enjoyed it so much and read it in one sitting. If you want to read my full review for the book you can check it out here. I ended up giving it five stars and I’m eagerly awaiting the release of the next book in the series. This time Cassidy is in Paris in the famous catacombs and I’m so excited because I loved the film As Above So Below – a horror film set in the same place. The first book was so creepy and fun and I’m sure Tunnel of Bones will be just as brilliant. The second instalment in the Cassidy Blake series is publishing September 5th from Scholastic Books.

Waiting on Wednesday #14: The Poison Song – Jen Williams

Waiting on Wednesday #14: The Poison Song – Jen Williams

Synopsis

From Jen Williams, three-time British Fantasy Award finalist, comes the electrifying conclusion to the Winnowing Flame trilogy. Exhilarating epic fantasy for fans of Robin Hobb.

Jump on board a war beast or two with Vintage, Noon and Tor and return to Sarn for the last installment of this epic series where the trio must gather their forces and make a final stand against the invading Jure’lia.

Thoughts

psThis is the epic conclusion to Jen Williams’ The Winnowing Flame trilogy and I am just dying to find out how this series ends. Book one and two were so incredibly addictive and The Bitter Twins ended on such a cliff hanger that I have no idea what is going to happen next. This series is an epic fantasy/ science fiction mix that is completely unlike anything I’ve ever read. It also features one of my all time favourite characters – Vintage who is brilliant in every way. The whole thing is a big, crazy adventure full of action and mystery. I loved that the synopsis for The Poison Song is really vague because it means I’m able to come up with a million different theories of what is going to happen. If you haven’t started this series yet and are a fan of big fantasy books with magnificent characters and epic world building – this is definitely one to get started on. The Poison Song publishes May 16th from Headline, which means you’ve got plenty of time to binge read the first two!

book cover (44)It’s time for another Waiting on Wednesday! Today I wanted to talk about King of Fools, the highly anticipated next instalment in the Shadow Game series. This series started last year with Ace of Shades. Ace of Shades is set in a City of Sin, where casino families reign. The story follows Enne Salta, a young woman who comes to the city in search of her missing mother. As she delves into the secrets of her mother’s past she meets Levi, a local street lord and all round crook. As she digs deeper Enne begins to lose herself in the glamour and corruption of New Reynes – but will that be enough to save her mother?

This story hooked me from the start and it was one of my favourite books of 2018. I loved the creativity behind the world, the mix of glitz, glamour and magic and the fast paced plot. I gave it five stars and you can read my full review for it here, if you want to know more. I really enjoyed Amanda Foody’s writing style and I am eager to continue this wonderful series. The story of King of Fools seems to pick up straight where  Ace of Shades left off and I can’t wait to dive into this world again. The stakes sound like they’re going to be even higher this time and this is definitely one of my most anticipated books of 2019. King of Fools is publishing May 2nd 2019 from HQ Young Adult.

Duncan’s devastatingly Gothic Something Dark and Holy trilogy..

Thoughts

Wicked Saints first caught my attention on Twitter when I saw a few people talking wicked saintsabout how excited they were for the upcoming release. The striking cover really appealed to me so I quickly looked it up on Goodreads and honestly after just the first few sentences of the blurb this book went on my wishlist. It sounds like it’s going to be an epic multi-POV story full of magic, war and mystery. I have wished for it on Netgalley and I am praying to the book gods that someone grants my wish. I’ve seen some excellent reviews for it already and one that suggested it was reminiscent of the Grishaverse so this is definitely high on my TBR! Wicked Saints is the first in the Something Dark and Holy Trilogy and is publishing April 2nd from Wednesday Books.

This week for waiting on Wednesday I wanted to talk about Song of Sorrow by Melinda Salisbury. This is the second instalment in the Sorrow series – the first being State of Sorrow which published in March of last year. I absolutely adore Melinda Salisbury’s writing style and her Sin Eater’s Daughter trilogy is one of my absolute favourites. Despite owning State of Sorrow and being desperate to read it I haven’t actually picked it up yet. It sounds amazing and with the next instalment coming out I’m eager to get started on what sounds like a gripping read full of political intrigue. The covers are also stunning and if it’s anything like The Sin Eater’s Daughter, I’m sure I’ll be absolutely hooked. Song of Sorrow is publishing March 7th 2019 from Scholastic Books.

BOOK REVIEW (62)

Synopsis

Return to the intoxicating land of Sempera, where the rich live for centuries and the poor bleed time to pay for a loaf of bread. At the end of Everless, Jules Ember discovers the truth behind her ability to manipulate time – and her link to the ancient myth that defines the kingdom and its violent history. Can the Alchemist overcome the Sorceress once and for all?

Thoughts

Welcome to another Waiting on Wednesday! Today I’m excited to talk about Evermore by book cover (36)Sara Holland. Evermore is the second book in the Everless series. I was lucky enough to win an ARC of Everless at YALC in 2017 and honestly I just devoured this book. I’ve been waiting (not so) patiently ever since for the release of the next book in the series. It was even greater to meet Sara at YALC in 2018 and get a signed copy. The world building in book one was excellent and I thought the story had such a unique plot. It was fast paced and incredibly gripping so I have really high hopes for Evermore. Evermore is being published January 3rd 2019 by Orchard Books and you can bet this is going to be one of the first books I read in 2019.

To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

Thoughts

book cover (13)This week for Waiting on Wednesday I thought I would rant about how much I am dying to read The Wicked King by Holly Black. For those who aren’t familiar this is the second instalment of The Folk of the Air, the first book being The Cruel Prince. The Cruel Prince has had tons of buzz and pretty much every blogger and booktuber has said how much they love it. I read it in one sitting at the start of the year and it’s still definitely one my favourite books of 2018. I am simply dying to know what is going to happen next and so many people have received ARCS and have been given copies at events that I feel like I might be one of the few people who haven’t read it yet. This is definitely going to be one of the first books I pick up in 2019 and I’m hoping it is going to be worth the wait!

The Wicked King is publishing January 8th 2019 from Hot Key Books.

BOOK REVIEW (25)
Synopsis

They came against her as a child. Now they face the woman.

The ice is advancing, the Corridor narrowing, and the empire is under siege from the Scithrowl in the east and the Durns in the west. Everywhere, the emperor’s armies are in retreat.

Nona faces the final challenges that must be overcome if she is to become a full sister in the order of her choice. But it seems unlikely that Nona and her friends will have time to earn a nun’s habit before war is on their doorstep.

Even a warrior like Nona cannot hope to turn the tide of war.

The shiphearts offer strength that she might use to protect those she loves, but it’s a power that corrupts. A final battle is coming in which she will be torn between friends, unable to save them all. A battle in which her own demons will try to unmake her.

A battle in which hearts will be broken, lovers lost, thrones burned.

Thoughts

Untitled design (80)I am so excited for the release of Holy Sister in 2019. I’m a big fan of Mark Lawrence, he always creates these gorgeous worlds with plots that you absolutely cannot get enough of. I race through all of his books but I must say this series – The Book of the Ancestor is one of my favourites. I gave both books one and two five stars and I’m sure Holy Sister will be just as kick ass and intense. Nona is just a brilliant protagonist and I’m desperate to know what happens to her next. Whilst the covers are not really my favourite (I prefer the cover art for The Prince of Thorns), I’m so excited to add this book to my collection. Holy Sister is publishing April 4th 2019 from HarperVoyager UK.

Waiting on Wednesday #6: Fire and Blood – George R. R. Martin

Waiting on Wednesday #6: Fire and Blood – George R. R. Martin

BOOK REVIEW (14)

Synopsis

With all the fire and fury fans have come to expect from internationally bestselling author George R. R. Martin, this is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros.

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why did it become so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What is the origin of Daenerys’s three dragon eggs? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than eighty all-new black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley. Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed.

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire and Blood is the ultimate game of thrones, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros.

Thoughts

Untitled design (50)George R. R. Martin is probably my favourite author and I love all things A Song of Ice and Fire. I’m obviously desperate to read The Winds of Winter and I know a lot of fans are annoyed about the release of Fire and Blood but I’m actually really looking forward to reading it. George R. R. Martin seems pretty excited about it and I love the idea of a history textbook about the Targaryen line. I really love my copy of The World of Ice and Fire and I think this will be in a similar vein.

I really adore George’s writing style and any new book from him is pretty much going to be a must read for me. The cover is also so stunning and I’ve always been so fascinated by Aegon the Conqueror so this is definitely right up my alley. I’ve pre-ordered this beautiful book so that I can dive in as soon as it arrives and I’m pretty sure it will be a five star read for me. Fire and Blood is publishing November 20th from Harper Voyager UK.

Thoughts

Untitled design (10)Welcome to another Waiting on Wednesday. This week I’m talking about the gorgeous Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. This is a new fantasy series from the author of The Bone Season and I’m dying to read it. They gave away some beautiful ARCS to bloggers and I am very jealous of those getting to dive into early. I’m excited to see how Shannon creates this new world and I’m looking forward to seeing the dragons and read more of Shannon’s beautiful writing. I also adore the cover and am only slightly intimated by the size – nearly 900 pages! The Priory of the Orange Tree is coming February 26th 2019 from Bloomsbury Books.
