Magical Readathon OWLS TBR!

Magical Readathon OWLS TBR!

July 23, 2019 (8)
The Magical Readathon is a readathon I look forward to every year and I’m so excited for it to start on April 1st. Since I’m stuck in the house I thought I would make a TBR for all the prompts and see how many I could get through. I’ll pick my chosen career at the end based on how many of these I manage to get through – so let’s dive in!

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T172615.434

Ancient Runes: Heart on the cover
Weirdly I couldn’t seem to find any books with a heart on the cover on my shelves so I’m going with Heart of Thorns by Bree Barton for this one.

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T172732.088
Arithmancy: Something outside your favourite genre
I tend to read fantasy and science fiction, so for this I’m going with Karen M. McManus’ latest contemporary thriller with One Of Us Is Next.

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T172834.493
Astronomy: Read the majority of this book at night
For this I picked a book I’ve been wanting to pick up for ages – Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson.

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T173040.013
Care of Magical Creatures: Creature with a beak on the cover
It took me absolutely ages to find a book with a creature that has a beak, but then I remembered I still haven’t gotten around to Crowfall by Ed McDonald, this was a really anticipated release for me so I’m super excited to read it.

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T174911.675
Charms: White cover
One of my most anticipated releases for 2020 is the sequel to Shadowscent: The Darkest Bloom by P. M. Freestone. Crown of Smoke has a gorgeous white cover so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to read it.

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T175057.413
Defence Against the Dark Arts: Book set at sea
So I’m not entirely sure if this book is set at sea but it’s called Stormtide and the paperback has a boat on the cover, so fingers crossed.

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T175203.023
Divination: assign numbers to your TBR and use number generator
I assigned numbers to my review books tbr and it gave me number 58, which is The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K. S. Villoso, which I’m so excited to read.

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T175422.944
Herbology: Title that starts with an M
For this I’m going to read Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey, which is one of the few books I could find on my shelf that started with an M.

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T175721.429
History of magic: book featuring witches
Serpent and Dove has been on my must read list for absolutely ages and I still haven’t gotten around to it so I thought this was the perfect time to pick it up.

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T175826.598
Muggle studies: Read a contemporary
Another one I’m super excited to read, the third instalment in Ashley Poston’s Once Upon a Con series. I love these books so much so I can’t wait to dive in.

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T180003.028
Potions: Book under 150 pages
I really struggled to find a book under 150 pages so I’ve gone with Seeker by Cate Tiernan, which is book ten in the Sweep series and is 172 pages, so pretty close!

Copy of book cover - 2020-03-30T180053.456
Transfiguration: book that includes shape-shifting
This is another one I’ve been meaning to get around to for ages. I’m not sure how much shapeshifting is actually in the book but seeing as it’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling I figured it would fit the bill!

So those are the books I’m hoping to get to for the Magical Readathon – even if I only get to some of them I’m so excited to read all of these. I’d love to know if you’re participating what you’re planning to read and if you’ve read any of these what you thought!

BOOK REVIEW - 2020-01-14T013018.610

I saw this readathon pop up on Twitter and thought it sounded like a really fun way to really kick off my reading for 2020. The readathon is lasting a month, starting on the 15th of January. I’m trying to do this as well as read all the books on my January TBR, so I’m not sure I’ll hit all the prompts, but I’m going to try my best. If you want to find out more about the readathon, you can check out the Twitter here!

Copy of book cover - 2020-01-13T224236.808
Read a title published before January 2020

I got The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware for Christmas and I’m dying to read it so figure this would be the perfect opportunity.

Copy of book cover (50)
Read an older anticipated release

Bloodchild by Anna Stephens was pretty much my most anticipated sequel of 2019 and I have no idea why I haven’t picked it up yet. Definitely a high priority.

book cover (49)

Read a book that’s been on your TBR at least six months
Finale by Stephanie Garber has been on my TBR for ages and I still haven’t gotten around to it yet so I would definitely love to get to this one.

Copy of book cover - 2020-01-13T224212.909

Read a book you have been avoiding because it’s an older backlist title
I’m not avoiding it but I couldn’t think of a book I was avoiding. Stormtide is a book I really want to get to so thought I would pop it in here.

book cover - 2019-04-03T110151.500
Read, reread or completely unhaul a book you’re still not sure you want on your shelf

For this I’m going for Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh – I’ve heard kind of mixed things and I’m not sure if I’ll like this one so I’d love to get to it and know for sure.

book cover - 2019-04-16T211642.383
Read a book you’ve been wanting to read but haven’t gotten around to for some reason – no excuses this time!

Crowfall by Ed McDonald was one of my high priority reads for 2019 that I didn’t get to – definitely looking to remedy that as soon as possible.

Copy of book cover - 2020-01-13T224151.097
Read the book that’s been on your TBR the longest

Truthwitch probably hasn’t been on my TBR the longest but it has been on there quite a while and I would love to get started on this series because it sounds amazing.

Copy of book cover - 2020-01-13T224134.920
Read a book you’ve been avoiding that intimidates you

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood. I loved The Handmaid’s Tale so so much and I’ve sort of been putting this off in case I don’t like it, because honestly I think it will break my heart if I don’t.

Copy of book cover (43)
Re
ad a book you’ve been avoiding because of mixed/bad reviews

These Rebel Waves by Sarah Raasch. I’ve heard mixed things, some saying it’s not quite what it makes itself out to be. I’ve never read anything by this author so I’d be interested to finally get around to this one.

Copy of book cover - 2020-01-13T224224.847
Read a book that was a gift or recommendation you’re not sure you’ll like

I was gifted a copy of The Family Upstairs and I’m not massively into crime fiction so I’m not sure if this will be for me but I’m excited to give it a go!

So those are the books I would love to get to for Backlist Bookathon. If you’re participating I’d love to see your TBR, and if you’ve read any of these I’d love to know what you thought.

Spookathon TBR!

Spookathon TBR!

BOOK REVIEW - 2019-10-13T223641.894
Things have been pretty busy at the moment and I haven’t been posted (or reading) as much as I’d like, but I’m hoping a Halloween themed readathon will be just the thing to get my reading back on track. I’m going to participate in Spookathon, the readathon run by BooksandLala, running 14th-20th of October. My TBR is going to be these beautiful books:

Read a thriller: Final Girls – Riley Sager
Copy of book cover (75)Ten years ago, college student Quincy Carpenter went on vacation with five friends and came back alone, the only survivor of a horror movie–scale massacre. In an instant, she became a member of a club no one wants to belong to—a group of similar survivors known in the press as the Final Girls. Lisa, who lost nine sorority sisters to a college dropout’s knife; Sam, who went up against the Sack Man during her shift at the Nightlight Inn; and now Quincy, who ran bleeding through the woods to escape Pine Cottage and the man she refers to only as Him. The three girls are all attempting to put their nightmares behind them, and, with that, one another. Despite the media’s attempts, they never meet.

Now, Quincy is doing well—maybe even great, thanks to her Xanax prescription. She has a caring almost-fiancé, Jeff; a popular baking blog; a beautiful apartment; and a therapeutic presence in Coop, the police officer who saved her life all those years ago. Her memory won’t even allow her to recall the events of that night; the past is in the past.

That is, until Lisa, the first Final Girl, is found dead in her bathtub, wrists slit, and Sam, the second, appears on Quincy’s doorstep. Blowing through Quincy’s life like a whirlwind, Sam seems intent on making Quincy relive the past, with increasingly dire consequences, all of which makes Quincy question why Sam is really seeking her out. And when new details about Lisa’s death come to light, Quincy’s life becomes a race against time as she tries to unravel Sam’s truths from her lies, evade the police and hungry reporters, and, most crucially, remember what really happened at Pine Cottage, before what was started ten years ago is finished.

Read something with red on the cover: This Lie Will Kill You – Chelsea Pitcher
Copy of book cover (76)Tell the truth. Or face the consequences.

Clue meets Riverdale in this page-turning thriller that exposes the lies five teens tell about a deadly night one year ago.

One year ago, there was a party.
At the party, someone died.
Five teens each played a part and up until now, no one has told the truth.

But tonight, the five survivors arrive at an isolated mansion in the hills, expecting to compete in a contest with a $50,000 grand prize. Of course…some things are too good to be true. They were each so desperate for the prize, they didn’t question the odd, rather exclusive invitation until it was too late.

Now, they realize they’ve been lured together by a person bent on revenge, a person who will stop at nothing to uncover what actually happened on that deadly night, one year ago.

Five arrived, but not all can leave. Will the truth set them free?
Or will their lies destroy them all?

Read something with a spooky word in the title: The Witch of Willow Hall – Hester Fox
Copy of book cover (77)Two centuries after the Salem witch trials, there’s still one witch left in Massachusetts. But she doesn’t even know it.

Take this as a warning: if you are not able or willing to control yourself, it will not only be you who suffers the consequences but those around you, as well.

New Oldbury, 1821

In the wake of a scandal, the Montrose family and their three daughters—Catherine, Lydia, and Emeline—flee Boston for their new country home, Willow Hall. The estate seems sleepy and idyllic. But a subtle menace creeps into the atmosphere, remnants of a dark history that call to Lydia, and to the youngest, Emeline.

All three daughters will be irrevocably changed by what follows, but none more than Lydia, who must draw on a power she never knew she possessed if she wants to protect those she loves. For Willow Hall’s secrets will rise, in the end…

Read something set in a spooky location: The Lost Ones – Anita Frank
Copy of book cover (78)Some houses are never at peace.

England, 1917

Reeling from the death of her fiancé, Stella Marcham welcomes the opportunity to stay with her pregnant sister, Madeleine, at her imposing country mansion, Greyswick – but she arrives to discover a house of unease and her sister gripped by fear and suspicion.

Before long, strange incidents begin to trouble Stella – sobbing in the night, little footsteps on the stairs – and as events escalate, she finds herself drawn to the tragic history of the house.

Aided by a wounded war veteran, Stella sets about uncovering Greyswick’s dark and terrible secrets – secrets the dead whisper from the other side…

In the classic tradition of The Woman in Black, Anita Frank weaves a spell-binding debut of family tragedy, loss and redemption.

Read something you wouldn’t normally read: Unexplained – Richard Maclean Smith
Copy of book cover (79)Based on the ‘world’s spookiest podcast’ of the same name comes Unexplained: a book of ten real-life mysteries which might be best left unexplained. . .

Demonic possession in 1970’s Germany.

UFOs in Rendlesham forest.

Reincarnation in Middlesbrough.

To this day, these real life mysteries and very many more evade explanation.

Based on one of the most successful paranormal podcasts ever, with over 10 million streams and downloads to date, Unexplained consists of ten chapters focussing on a different paranormal event, from Australia to Germany, the UK to Zimbabwe, using the stories as gateways to a journey beyond the veil of the uncanny, exploring what they reveal of the human experience.

Taking ideas once thought of as supernatural or paranormal and questioning whether radical ideas in science might provide a new but equally extraordinary explanation, Unexplained is The Examined Life meets The X Files.

So those are the books I’m hoping to tackle for Spookathon! If you’ve read any of them I’d love to know what you thought, and if you’re participating, definitely let me know what you’re planning to read!

What’s On My Netgalley Shelf? #2

What’s On My Netgalley Shelf? #2

When I did this post a few months ago I thought it would be a way for me to try and increase my terrible Netgalley ratio as well as highlight some of the Netgalley books I’m excited to be reading. I have been struggling reading ebooks recently so instead of improving my ratio has gone down from 48% to 44%. I’ve been trying to limit my requesting, only asking for books that I really really want to read. I am determined to get this increased over the next few months and get some of these checked off my TBR!

1. The Black Hawks – David Wragg
Copy of book cover (62)I’ve seen a bit of buzz about this one on Twitter so when a Netgalley widget appeared in my inbox I was unable to resist the temptation to download a copy.

Life as a knight is not what Vedren Chel imagined. Bound by oath to a dead-end job in the service of a lazy step-uncle, Chel no longer dreams of glory – he dreams of going home.

When invaders throw the kingdom into turmoil, Chel finds opportunity in the chaos: if he escorts a stranded prince to safety, Chel will be released from his oath.

All he has to do is drag the brat from one side of the country to the other, through war and wilderness, chased all the way by ruthless assassins.

With killers on your trail, you need killers watching your back. You need the Black Hawk Company – mercenaries, fighters without equal, a squabbling, scrapping pack of rogues.

Prepare to join the Black Hawks.
2. Angel Mage – Garth Nix
Copy of book cover (63)I am so so excited for this book. Garth Nix is one of my favourite authors and I’ve read so many of his wonderful books. Angel Mage sounds brilliant and it’s definitely a high priority read.

More than a century has passed since Liliath crept into the empty sarcophagus of Saint Marguerite, fleeing the Fall of Ystara. But she emerges from her magical sleep still beautiful, looking no more than nineteen, and once again renews her single-minded quest to be united with her lover, Palleniel, the archangel of Ystara.

A seemingly impossible quest, but Liliath is one of the greatest practitioners of angelic magic to have ever lived, summoning angels and forcing them to do her bidding.

Liliath knew that most of the inhabitants of Ystara died from the Ash Blood plague or were transformed into beastlings, and she herself led the survivors who fled into neighboring Sarance. Now she learns that angels shun the Ystaran’s descendants. If they are touched by angelic magic, their blood will turn to ash. They are known as Refusers, and can only live the most lowly lives.

But Liliath cares nothing for the descendants of her people, save how they can serve her. It is four young Sarancians who hold her interest: Simeon, a studious doctor-in-training; Henri, a dedicated fortune hunter; Agnez, an adventurous musketeer cadet; and Dorotea, an icon-maker and scholar of angelic magic. They are the key to her quest.

The four feel a strange kinship from the moment they meet, but do not know why, or suspect their importance. All become pawns in Liliath’s grand scheme to fulfill her destiny and be united with the love of her life. No matter the cost to everyone else. . .

3. Imaginary Friend – Stephen Chobsky
Copy of book cover (64)I really enjoyed The Perks of Being A Wallflower and read it a few times growing up so I’m really intrigued to be try his latest novel. I’ve been putting it off a little because it’s so huge (700+ pages) but I’m hoping to get to it soon.

Christopher is seven years old. Christopher is the new kid in town. Christopher has an imaginary friend. The epic work of literary horror from the #1 bestselling author of THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER.

We can swallow our fear or let our fear swallow us.

Single mother Kate Reese is on the run. Determined to improve life for her and her son, Christopher, she flees an abusive relationship in the middle of the night with Christopher at her side. Together, they find themselves drawn to the tight-knit community of Mill Grove, Pennsylvania. It’s as far off the beaten track as they can get. Just one highway in, one highway out.

At first, it seems like the perfect place to finally settle down. Then Christopher vanishes. For six awful days, no one can find him. Until Christopher emerges from the woods at the edge of town, unharmed but not unchanged. He returns with a voice in his head only he can hear, with a mission only he can complete: Build a tree house in the woods by Christmas, or his mother and everyone in the town will never be the same again.

Soon Kate and Christopher find themselves in the fight of their lives, caught in the middle of a war playing out between good and evil, with their small town as the battleground.

4. The Bone Ships – R. J. Barker
Copy of book cover (65)R.J. Barker is an author who I’m dying to read and just haven’t had the chance to pick up yet. I own the Age of Assassin books and think they look right up my alley, but I just haven’t read them yet. The Bone Ships sounds even more incredible, so I couldn’t resist clicking the request button.

A brilliantly imagined saga of honor, glory, and warfare, The Bone Ships is the epic laugh of a new fantasy from David Gemmell Award-nominated RJ Barker.

Two nations at war. A prize beyond compare.

For generations, the Hundred Isles have built their ships from the bones of ancient dragons to fight an endless war.

The dragons disappeared, but the battles for supremacy persisted.

Now the first dragon in centuries has been spotted in far-off waters, and both sides see a chance to shift the balance of power in their favour. Because whoever catches it will win not only glory, but the war.

5. Wild Savage Stars – Kristina Perez
Copy of book cover (66)I bought Sweet Black Waves at YALC last year and ended up completely devouring it on the train back to Scotland. I’m not normally one for romanc-y type fantasy novels but I really enjoyed this and I’m honestly just dying to find out what happens to Branwen next.

Inspired by the legend of Tristan and Iseult, Wild Savage Stars is the spellbinding sequel to Sweet Black Waves.

Branwen has a secret powerful enough to destroy two kingdoms.

Her ancient magic led to a terrible betrayal by both her best friend, the princess Essy, and her first love, Tristan. Now this same magic is changing Branwen. Adrift in a rival court, Branwen must hide the truth from the enemy king by protecting the lovers who broke her heart―and finds herself considering a darker path.

Not everyone wants the alliance with Branwen’s kingdom to succeed―peace is balanced on a knife’s edge, and her only chance may be to embrace the darkness within…

So those are some of the books on my Netgalley shelf! If you’ve read any of them I’d love to know what you thought, and if you use Netgalley what books you have on your shelf!

Hogwarts-A-Thon TBR!

Hogwarts-A-Thon TBR!

I had such fun doing the N.E.W.T.S readathon last month I thought I might join in with this Harry Potter themed readathon too. Starting today, September 1st it is hosted by Georgi from @niffler_reads and @laureads on Twitter. It runs for the whole month and features 8 prompts, so let’s dive into my TBR!

Copy of book cover (51)Platform 9 3/4: Read a sequel
For this I’m reading Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff, as I imagine a whole load of other people are. It’s number one on my priority list so I figured I’m best reading it first!

Copy of book cover (50)Welcome to Hogwarts: A book over 384 pages
For this I’m going with Bloodchild by Anna Stephens. This is my other majorly anticipated book and it comes out right at the start of September so I should definitely get to it. According to Goodreads it has 503 pages, so it fits in nicely.

book cover - 2019-04-23T133751.463Sorting Hat: A book with your house colour on the cover
I had hoped to get to We Hunt the Flame during the N.E.W.T.S. but I didn’t manage to read it so I’m adding it on for this month. It has a blue cover and I’m a Ravenclaw so I should definitely get to it for this readathon.

Copy of book cover (52)Ghosts of Hogwarts: Read a contemporary
The New Boy by Paula Rawsthorne has been on my TBR for a while so I thought it would be perfect for this prompt!

Copy of book cover (53)Mr Ollivander: A book over two years old
Six of Crows is on my list of books to read by the end of the year and I still haven’t gotten to it so I’m adding it to this readathon for sure.

Copy of book cover (54)Diagon Alley: A book with lots of hype
I recently read and loved The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang and totally loved it so I would really loved to get to the sequel, The Dragon Republic, this month.

Copy of book cover (55)Flourish & Blotts: A random book from your TBR
I need to read A Shadow on the Lens by Sam Hurcom for a blog tour later in month. I’m really looking forward to reading this one, it sounds brilliant.

book cover - 2019-04-16T211642.383BONUS – Forbidden Forest: A book with dark themes
This is a bonus prompt if you read the other books, and for this I’m going with Crowfall by Ed McDonald because I honestly can’t believe I haven’t read this yet. I’ve loved the first two books and they’re dark and creepy so I’m sure Crowfall will be too.

So those are the books I’m hoping to read during Hogwarts-A-Thon! If you’re participating I’d love to know what you’re planning to read!

I started a little late because I was moving house, but I’m so excited to dive into my TBR. If you want to know more, G at BookRoast has all the details!

I completed 10 O.W.L.S in April but there are three prompts for each exam this time around so I’m not sure how many I will make it through but I’ve created a TBR to give me a shot at getting Outstanding in each.

A Game of Booksathon TBR!

A Game of Booksathon TBR!

img_6100.jpg
I’m starting this a little late as I only just discovered this brilliant Game of Thrones themed readathon from Noura over at Perks of Being Noura. I love all things Game of Thrones so I thought this would be the perfect readathon to challenge myself to get some of those great big fantasy tomes off my TBR.

The readathon runs the whole month of June and you can find out all the details here. There are 11 prompts as well as the option to read the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series (I’m skipping this because I’ve read the series a few times).

I’m hoping I don’t burn myself out reading too many fantasy books but a lot of these I can use for multiple prompts, and I can always swap them out for something shorter – here goes!

The Game of Thrones: First book in a series/trilogy
Lost Gods – Micah Yongo
34804767

House Targaryen: Book with a mythical creature/dragons
Stormtide – Den Patrick
43307090

Scallywagathon TBR!

Scallywagathon TBR!

BOOK REVIEW - 2019-05-06T152802.387
This is going up slightly late but Scallywagathon is a pirate theme readathon that is happening this week May 5th – May 12th. This time around the theme is pirates in space and the aim of the readathon is to follow a path on the map and complete the associated reading prompt. You can find out lots more about the readathon over at their Twitter!

D5bGLqeXoAAhq34.jpg

So I’m starting with challenge number 5 and following a path from there. These are the books I’ve chosen and I’m so excited to read all of them!

For this I’m going with The Princess and the Fangirl by Ashley Poston. I read and loved Geekarella so I’m really excited for this companion novel!

The Prince and the Pauper gets a modern makeover in this adorable, witty, and heartwarming young adult novel set in the Geekerella universe by national bestselling author Ashley Poston.

Imogen Lovelace is an ordinary fangirl on an impossible mission: save her favorite character, Princess Amara, from being killed off from her favorite franchise, Starfield. The problem is, Jessica Stone—the actress who plays Princess Amara—wants nothing more than to leave the intense scrutiny of the fandom behind. If this year’s ExcelsiCon isn’t her last, she’ll consider her career derailed.

When a case of mistaken identity throws look-a-likes Imogen and Jess together, they quickly become enemies. But when the script for the Starfield sequel leaks, and all signs point to Jess, she and Imogen must trade places to find the person responsible. That’s easier said than done when the girls step into each other’s shoes and discover new romantic possibilities, as well as the other side of intense fandom. As these “princesses” race to find the script-leaker, they must rescue themselves from their own expectations, and redefine what it means to live happily ever after.

wicked saints7. Blow Down the Man: Read a book by a female author
For this I’m going with Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan. I’ve heard incredible things about this and I recently saw someone talking about it saying if you love the Darkling from the Grisha trilogy then you’ll absolutely love this. Can’t wait!
A girl who can speak to gods must save her people without destroying herself.

A prince in danger must decide who to trust.

A boy with a monstrous secret waits in the wings.

Together, they must assassinate the king and stop the war.

In a centuries-long war where beauty and brutality meet, their three paths entwine in a shadowy world of spilled blood and mysterious saints, where a forbidden romance threatens to tip the scales between dark and light. Wicked Saints is the thrilling start to Emily A. Duncan’s devastatingly Gothic Something Dark and Holy trilogy.

book cover (44)C. Afeared – A book you’ve been afraid to read
I’m going with King of Fools by Amanda Foody. I absolutely adored Ace of Shades and I’ve seen a few people say there are some heartbreaking moments in this. I am not prepared.

Indulge your vices in the City of Sin, where a sinister street war is brewing and fame is the deadliest killer of them all…

On the quest to find her missing mother, prim and proper Enne Salta became reluctant allies with Levi Glaisyer, the city’s most famous con man. Saving his life in the Shadow Game forced Enne to assume the identity of Seance, a mysterious underworld figure. Now, with the Chancellor of the Republic dead and bounties on both their heads, she and Levi must play a dangerous game of crime and politics…with the very fate of New Reynes at stake.

Thirsting for his freedom and the chance to build an empire, Levi enters an unlikely partnership with Vianca Augustine’s estranged son. Meanwhile, Enne remains trapped by the mafia donna’s binding oath, playing the roles of both darling lady and cunning street lord, unsure which side of herself reflects the truth.

As Enne and Levi walk a path of unimaginable wealth and opportunity, new relationships and deadly secrets could quickly lead them into ruin. And when unforeseen players enter the game, they must each make an impossible choice: To sacrifice everything they’ve earned in order to survive…

Or die as legends.

book cover (45)10. Assessing the booty – Read a recently hauled book.
For this I’m going with Aurora Rising by Ami Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. I started yesterday and I’ve already read a big chunk of it – I’m loving it so much.

The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

They’re not the heroes we deserve. They’re just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.

I Should Have Read That Book Tag

BOOK REVIEW - 2019-05-04T160933.299.png
I saw this tag over at Ruby’s Book Blog and thought it looked like fun so I thought I would give it a go. This tag was created by the lovely BooksNest.

231252661. A book that a certain friend is always telling you to read
One of my closest friends is forever recommending books by Clare Mackintosh. I’m getting more and more into crime fiction and I picked up a copy of I Let You Go. She also gave me a copy of I See You, so I really need to get cracking on trying her books.

173333192. A book that’s been on your TBR forever and yet you still haven’t picked it up
This is probably the majority of my TBR to be perfectly honest. I’ve had Burial Rites by Hannah Kent on my TBR for the longest time and every time I pick it up I think it sounds like such a brilliant read and then I never get around to actually reading it.

206176363. A book in a series you’ve started, but haven’t gotten round to finishing yet
I’m completely terrible for starting a series and never finishing it. A prime example is the Throne of Glass series. I’ve read The Assassin’s Blade, Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight – I own the rest of the series but haven’t picked them up yet.

128734. A classic you’ve always liked the sound of, but never actually read
I really like reading classics and I studied English Literature at University so have read a fair number – I haven’t yet read Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier yet so I really need to get around to that.

28374007 (1)5. A popular book that it seems everyone but you has read
I could probably make a list a mile long of popular books I haven’t read yet but I’d really liked to get around to reading Three Dark Crowns because so many people seem to love that series.

183710316. A book that inspired a film/TV adaptation that you really love, but you just haven’t read it yet
This was quite a difficult one because I’m a bit of a stickler for reading the book before I see the movie but I saw A New York Winter’s Tale at the cinema and enjoyed it. I later learned it was originally  a book so I bought a copy and haven’t read it yet – does that count?

42190061 (2)7. A book you see all over Instagram but haven’t picked up yet
I’ve been seeing The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman all over Instagram lately and I am really excited to read that one. I’m definitely hoping to get to it this month.

So that was the I should have read that tag! If you fancy having a go consider yourself tagged!

Books On My TBR I Really Need to Read!

Books On My TBR I Really Need to Read!

BOOK REVIEW - 2019-04-30T165943.999.png
AKA these books have been on my TBR for ages and I still haven’t read them.

1. A Darker Shade of Magic – V. E. Schwab
book cover - 2019-03-21T124821.794I have no excuse for why I haven’t read this series yet. I’ve read and loved so many of Victoria’s books but I still haven’t started this series. I think I might be building it up too much in my head and I’m now scared I’m not going to love it as much as I want to.

Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.

Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.

Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they’ll first need to stay alive.

2. The Extinction Trials – S. M. Wilson
book cover - 2019-04-30T162009.235My boyfriend bought me a copy of this book and I was super excited to read it but for some reason I just haven’t picked it up yet. There’s been a few sequels and I’ve seen tons of people talk about how much they love it  but it still sits on my TBR judging me.

Betrayal. Sacrifice. Survival.
Welcome to the Extinction Trials.

In Stormchaser and Lincoln’s ruined world, the only way to survive is to risk everything. To face a contest more dangerous than anyone can imagine. And they will do anything to win.

But in a land full of monsters – human and reptilian – they can’t afford to trust anyone. Perhaps not even each other…

3. The Night Circus – Erin Morgenstern
book cover - 2019-04-30T162337.569So many people love this book and I know I really need to read it. I’ve heard people talking about her new book that is coming out at the end of the year so I would love it if I could read this before then.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

4. The Song of Achilles – Madeline Miller
book cover - 2019-04-30T162549.201This is one of the books that have been on my TBR the longest. I also have Circe to read and they both look like beautiful, stunning reads but for some reason I always seem to pick something else from my TBR.

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. By all rights their paths should never cross, but Achilles takes the shamed prince as his friend, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine their bond blossoms into something deeper – despite the displeasure of Achilles’ mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But then word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus journeys with Achilles to Troy, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear.

Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart.

5. Sleeping Beauties – Stephen & Owen King
book cover - 2019-04-30T163206.096Stephen King is an author I really want to read more of. I own quite a few of his books but I’ve only read one or two. I picked up Sleeping Beauties because I thought it sounded really fascinating, but it’s also absolutely huge and I think that’s why it’s been on my TBR so long.

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep; they become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze.

If they are awakened, and the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.

The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

Is Evie a medical anomaly to be studied, or is she a demon who must be slain?

6. Invictus – Ryan Graudin
book cover - 2019-04-30T163525.142I got given an ARC of this at YALC one year and Ryan was kind enough to sign my copy. I was super excited to read it and I still haven’t gotten around to it. Why?!?

Time flies when you’re plundering history.

Farway Gaius McCarthy was born outside of time. The son of a time-traveling Recorder from 2354 AD and a gladiator living in Rome in 95 AD, Far’s birth defies the laws of nature. Exploring history himself is all he’s ever wanted, and after failing his final time-traveling exam, Far takes a position commanding a ship with a crew of his friends as part of a black market operation to steal valuables from the past.

But during a heist on the sinking Titanic, Far meets a mysterious girl who always seems to be one step ahead of him. Armed with knowledge that will bring Far’s very existence into question, she will lead Far and his team on a race through time to discover a frightening truth: History is not as steady as it seems.

7. Into the Drowning Deep – Mira Grant
Untitled design (98)I picked this up on a whim in Waterstones one day and then when I went home I saw loads of booktubers talking about it and saw people raving about how good it was. I’ve put it on my TBR for readathons a few times but I always end up reading something else.

Seven years ago, the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a “mockumentary” bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.

Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they’re not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life’s work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves. But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

8. Red Rising – Pierce Brown
book cover - 2019-04-30T164739.535This is one of those series that are so hyped I’m scared to start it in case I don’t love it as much as I hope I will. I’ve seen that my local library has this on audiobook so maybe that’s the way to go? If you’ve read/listened to this one I’d be really interested to know what you thought!

“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.”

“I live for you,” I say sadly.

Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.

Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies… even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

9. Falling Kingdoms – Morgan Rhodes
book cover - 2019-04-30T165114.341I saw this and a few of the sequels in a secondhand bookshop and bought them all because they sounded interesting and they were really cheap. They’ve been sitting there for a while and I’m honestly not even sure what they’re about at this point.

In the three kingdoms of Mytica, magic has long been forgotten. And while hard-won peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest now simmers below the surface.

As the rulers of each kingdom grapple for power, the lives of their subjects are brutally transformed… and four key players, royals and rebels alike, find their fates forever intertwined. Cleo, Jonas, Lucia, and Magnus are caught in a dizzying world of treacherous betrayals, shocking murders, secret alliances, and even unforeseen love.

The only outcome that’s certain is that kingdoms will fall. Who will emerge triumphant when all they know has collapsed?

It’s the eve of war…. Choose your side.

Princess: Raised in pampered luxury, Cleo must now embark on a rough and treacherous journey into enemy territory in search of magic long thought extinct.

Rebel: Jonas, enraged at injustice, lashes out against the forces of oppression that have kept his country cruelly impoverished. To his shock, he finds himself the leader of a people’s revolution centuries in the making.

Sorceress: Lucia, adopted at birth into the royal family, discovers the truth about her past—and the supernatural legacy she is destined to wield.

Heir: Bred for aggression and trained to conquer, firstborn son Magnus begins to realize that the heart can be more lethal than the sword….

10. Wicked Saints – Emily A. Duncan
wicked saintsNow this one is cheating slightly because I only got it last week but it was one of my most anticipated releases, I specifically ordered it with the intention of reading it on holiday last week and guess what? I read four books on holiday – none of them Wicked Saints. I’m determined to not let this sit on my TBR forever because it sounds brilliant.
